Hey, when you take a strong position on an issue, you're likely
to get some feedback. Not all of it is going to be positive. Take Mark Galli,
Editor-in-Chief of Christianity Today Magazine. He
recently published an editorial condemning President Trump and asserting that
he was "morally unfit" to be President. Not a huge problem by itself…everybody’s
entitled to their opinion…except that Galli unwisely invoked the name of
Reverend Billy Graham, who founded the magazine. Oopsie! Turns out that Rev.
Graham was a supporter of Donald Trump and voted for him for president.
Anyway, now 200 or so "evangelicals" have come out in angry
contradiction to Galli and his editorial.
You can read that article HERE.
President Trump surely is a controversial, polarizing character
in modern American history. You love him or you hate him. We can say that he is
not a "moral" or "ethical" man, and there is plenty of
evidence to support that statement. Trump is also not a "good
Christian" by any stretch of the imagination (although who am I to
judge?). Luckily, the U.S. is not a Christian nation, per se.
Our country may have been created with respect to certain Christian principles
and values, but the founders went out of their way to ensure that the
government would never be dominated by any one particular church or religion -
like England.
Every voice needs to be heard - even Galli's. This is America,
after all, where we fight and die for our First Amendment rights. Nobody should
be shouted down or forcibly shut up, no matter how unpopular are their words. Mark Galli may have taken a provocative
stance among conservative Christians, but I admire him for doing it. Donald
Trump is, to be honest, a pretty despicable person. Impeachably despicable?
Ehhh, I don't know. People...*voters*...should seriously be asking themselves
if Trump is really the person we/they want leading our country for another four
years?
For Christians, that's got to be a tough question. To them, morality
comes from God. But this is America; we
cannot demand that all politicians believe the same things we do…or even that they be
Christians for that matter. We cannot
even tell them what is “moral” behavior and what’s not, for morality is one of those
ill-defined, subjective concepts. Like Supreme
Court Justice Potter Stewart said in 1964 when asked to define pornography: ”I know it when
I see it!" But how important
is morality in a supposedly religion-free government that has worked so hard to
expel God from our lives?
Well, morality is about how we act towards others within the
framework of society, right? Those generally-good feelings (and actions) toward
one another are innate to most – but not all – of us humans. You don’t have to be a Christian to be a moral
person - but it helps. Still, as a
Christian I cannot demand that a person adhere to the same moral standards as I
do. And so Trump is a dilemma. I may not personally be able to stand him, but does that mean he can't be a good President?
For atheists, it may even be a harder question - because we know
that morals (and their close friend, ethics) are "squishy." They
change over time and are not generally set in stone, as it were. Things that
were once seen as immoral don’t seem like such a big deal now. And so, should
we even care about how "immoral" Trump acts in the present? Perhaps
one day in the future, his current behavior, like that of unmarried couples
living together, or pregnancy out of wedlock, both of which were once
considered highly immoral, may seem perfectly acceptable and inoffensive.
And wouldn’t that be some shit!

As usual, you stated it well my friend. You’re right, the guy from Christianity Today has the right to say what he believes. I really don’t care for the term “evangelical Christian.” I’m part of a church that would be considered such, so I’m sure many people would label me that way. But if they spend time with me, they’ll learn I hardly fit that mold. I learned in law school “reasonable minds differ” and that applies to reasonable Christian minds. We don’t all agree! Shocking!
I’m no theologian and I could be wrong about this, but I have a hunch when I meet my maker, He’s going to be a lot less concerned about some of the things folks get worked up over - some of the things I even got worked up over — than we might think. Just a hunch.
I agree with you, Bob. Actually, both Bobs.
Well written as usual! I particular like your statement about shifting views on what it moral. As someone who is married to someone of a different ethnic race, it wasn't all that long ago that my situation would have been considered immoral and even today, a minority of people still feel that way.
When it comes to public shaming of morality as Galli attempted to do, I always leave that for others. I have always felt that we will all meet the ultimate judge with our deaths and until then, whom am I to try and interpret his views.
Thank you for your comments, y'all :-)
I'll tell ya, Trump confuses me. I know that Liberals believe otherwise, but NOBODY can be as stupid as they claim Trump is and still be a big a businessman as he - not to mention waging a successful campaign for President of the United States. I mean, to hear some people tell it, Trump is a complete moron. If that is the case, how'd he become President?? He ain't as dumb as people give him credit for.
How did Trump get to become President? Well, he's obviously pro-Big Business. And enough Mr. Bigs got behind him to throw money at him so maybe they could get a piece of the next Trump Tower in Moscow. But also, Trump positioned himself as a populist...the "anti-politician." That resonated with the American public, who were tired of business as usual and saw Hillary as just more of the same Obama stuff. Combine the power of those two groups, and who needs the Russians! Trump walked away with the election; Hillary was humiliated...for a second time.
And then there's Trump's lying. "Trump lies!" Liberals yell. "He lies SO MUCH!! Everything that comes out of his mouth is a lie!"
Well...yeah...maybe. Me? I don't take Trump too seriously. Some of what Trump says is *clearly* false. We know it...and he knows it too. Sometimes he's just trolling us. When he says that he knows more than anybody on the planet about..."X"...well, obviously he does not. But he says inflammatory things like that and Liberal heads explode. I think he enjoys it. Here's the problem for Liberals: They screech that Trump is such a liar, while implying that Democrats *NEVER* lie! Well, heh. Conservatives really don't care that Trump lies so much. Because Conservatives know that *ALL* politicians lie (even Republicans), and they don't even pretend otherwise.
Is Trump trying to line his own (and his family's) pockets by doing the same things that he's accusing Joe Biden, etc. of? Probably so, probably so.
Getting back to morality...I think Conservatives don't fret much over Trump's apparent lack of morals/ethics. Should they be outraged? Perhaps. But for some reason they are not. It's hard to fathom and explain. But I think it's because Conservatives still believe that at the end of the day, Trump cares more about Americans than the Democratic candidates do. Despite all of their hollow bleating about how they care about the middle class, nobody really believes that the richies like Joe Biden, and Senators Warren and Sanders really care about you and me. Maybe Trump doesn't either, but he has everyone convinced that he does. Which is why he'll probably win again in 2020.
What fascinates me is that with an upcoming election and knowing exactly how Trump beat Hillary and got into office, for the reasons stated above, I would have thought the Democrats would have adjusted their tack to take some of the wind out of his sails. But in my opinion, all they have done is stood there and blown wind into his sails.
Perhaps once they get past the primaries and it comes down to just one candidate against Trump, they will adjust. I hope so because I always love a good election night and watching one television pundit after another eat crow.
It is mind-boggling to me that all the Democrats could do in the last three years is focus on getting Trump impeached and fail to come up with someone would could/would beat him in 2020. And let's be honest, exactly NONE of the current cast of goobers has a real chance against him. How stupid can the DNC be? Unless...unless...as I've said before, perhaps they have a certain (ahem) candidate in the wings, ready to pounce... Maybe this has been their plan all along. Hillary again? There is no doubt in my mind she wants it...if only for the simple reason of "I TOLD YOU SO, YOU STUPID PEOPLE!" vindication. But that might not be enough to get her into the White House. She still has some serious obstacles to overcome - mainly that a shit-ton of people simply don't like her, including women.
Traditionally, ex-presidents fade into the woodwork after their term is up. It may be just a courtesy, but in the past we haven't seen former presidents staying in the news. But Obama is breaking that mold! And now, every time I see a headline like, "President Obama lists his ten favorite movies of 2019," or some bullshit story like that, I think to myself, "Why?" Granted, he's still young, and he wants to feel relevant, and clearly he is FAR from "retired" from anything, much less politics.
Sooooo, does he keep getting press because he innocently likes being in the limelight and misses it? Or is there another reason? The skeptic and cynic in me (can one be a cynical skeptic?) thinks there's something afoot. Democrats are in a panic. The thought of a second Trump presidency just drives them crazy. Personally, I think the Obama's are *seriously* considering Michelle for a run at the presidency. They could wait until 2024, as some of my friends have suggested, but I wonder...hmm. Michelle could win it. Or at least, between Trump and Michelle, the outcome would not be a sure thing. In fact, I do believe Trump would lose. But between Bernie and Trump...well...sorry, Bernie. You shouldn't have let Hillary steal it from you last time; this time it just ain't happening either.
I think that some Democrats really, really, really thought Trump would quit rather than face impeachment. Heh. They seriously misjudged the man. Trump will wear this impeachment like a badge of honor. Asterisk on his presidency? Stain on his legacy? He won't care. He'll claim that he was the most popular President with the highest approval rating and best economy who ever got impeached. And years from now, nobody will care.
I've seen Michelle's name bandied about as a potential candidate in a variety of places, and always with positive feedback. I don't know if I could handle that. Despite all Hillary's baggage (which might be her undoing), I think I could tolerate her before I could Michelle. I hope it never comes down to either of them. Honestly, I wish I could just crawl under a rock and avoid all of it.
LOL Kelly, that's how many of us feel! But remember, the world did not end when Barack Obama got elected President, and it did not end when Donald Trump did as well. Presidents come and go, and ultimately they make very little difference in our "real" lives. Yes, Obama forced me to have health care, but it was *far* from "affordable." Still, I guess I'm happy that I'm covered in the event of a tragedy - I'll just go bankrupt as the hospital tries to collect the deductible :-/
Trump has surely shaken things up and exposed the dark underbelly of politics. The Democrats are frantically trying to get him removed from office before he exposes more of their corrupt practices - even if he and his family are engaging in those very same corrupt "get rich over there" practices.
Me, I would absolutely vote for Michelle before I'd vote for Hillary - unless it was Michelle for Prez and HRC for VP. Then I'd go with Trump - again. So don't crawl under a rock - come out and enjoy the circus!
